Backpacks and Nutrition for Crow Creek Families
The Crow Creek Indians have had a difficult time with a local power plant that is charging them way above normal rates for electricity, even though tthe average income is less than $5,000 a year and the plant is located on their land. Routinely the power plant turns off electricity of Indian families subjecting them to sub-zero weather, sometimes for months.
Last year, with the help of partner CAN-DO, Nourish America, Office Depot Foundation, New Chapter and other natural product manufacturers joined together to provide backpacks to the children along with daily multivitamins.
New Chapter went even farther and included Crow Creek in their Sacred Seeds program, where the seeds and plants of tribe can be preserved for future generations. In addition, the children and their families learn to garden and to grow plants and herbs to earn extra income and to add nutrition to their diets.
